About Us

Our outdoor nursery is in the beautiful National Trust Greenbank Garden in Clarkston.

It is based on the Forest School model, which is a holistic, child-led, educational process which observes, promotes and supports physical, emotional and social development. We are also following the Curriculum for Excellence for Outdoor Learning and the principles of GIRFEC.

The children spend the majority of their time outside, connecting with nature and one another, at their own pace and in their own way. At Woodland Play Ltd we are based in the Top Paddock as our Base Camp, where we have set up our mud kitchen, learning areas, bug hotel, loose parts construction area and raised beds for fruit and vegetable growing. Then we have the run of the woodland walks, where the possibilities are as endless as the imagination of the preschoolers attending. For our indoor base, we have the Coach House which is used as a drop off point for children arriving before 8.30 a.m.

All children are supervised by staff that are trained in outdoor learning on a 1:6 ratio and we are registered with the Care Inspectorate.

Woodland Play Ltd opened as Greenbank Nursery in January 2015 and offers places for 3-5 year olds, Monday to Friday term time. Our current prices per daily sessions are displayed below. Woodland Play Ltd has partnership funding with East Renfrewshire Council and we also accept childcare vouchers.

Clothing Kit List

Children will need to be equipped with adequately warm and waterproof clothing and footwear for everyday they attend. Please see the kit list below for what should be provided. Woodland Play can provide the first pair of high quality waterproofs for a reduced price of £25. Subsequent sets can be purchased at cost price or parents may supply their own.

COLDER WEATHER

  • Thermal base layer –leggings, long sleeve top and long thermal socks.
  • A thinner long sleeve top.
  • A warm fleece/wool long sleeve top.
  • Cosy trousers i.e. tracksuit pants (NOT jeans).
  • Two pairs of mittens (at least one waterproof).
  • Warm/waterproof hat with earflaps and snood (these are very warm!).
  • Neoprene or fleece lined wellies or waterproof walking/snow boots. The Warm Welly Company do good ones.
  • Warm socks x 2

WARMER WEATHER

  • Long trousers (these are still a necessity to prevent scratches and stings)
  • Short sleeve top/lightweight long sleeve top
  • Jumper (as it can be cool at the beginning of the day)
  • A sun hat, preferably ‘legionnaires style’
  • Waterproof trousers and jacket:

Waterproofs should be elasticated dungaree style trousers and a jacket with a hood. These can be tricky to fasten, but the children soon become quite proficient and this is great for their fine motor skills! It is important that even in dry weather your child still has their waterproofs as this enables them to play in puddles and mud and also sit on the damp ground etc. They also protect from scratches and prickles!

At the beginning of the spring days the weather can be swiftly changeable so better to be over dressed and able to peel layers off. Once we start seriously taking the layers off trousers are still preferable to shorts due to nettles and ‘jaggy’ things –brambles and thistles! Shoes rather than sandals are more appropriate.

Come the summer we’d still like children to carry waterproofs as it may be a beautiful day but the rain can surprise us and in the woods the ground may still be wet and muddy. Some children can be really put off by damp legs and bottoms!

Safety

“When children spend time in the great outdoors, getting muddy, getting wet, getting stung by nettles, they learn important lessons – what is slippery, what hurts, what you can trip over or fall from.”
Peter Cornmail R.S.P.A

At Woodland Play Ltd our children benefit in many ways from the experience of being allowed to take risks. The greatest effects can be seen in their confidence, self-esteem and communication skills. They also take responsibility for their own safety. Alongside curriculum planning, risk assessment is an important part of our preparation. We found the Level 2 OCN accredited course Forest School Assistant Practitioner excellent preparation for this role.

In addition to this staff risk asses on a daily, weekly, seasonal, activity, individual and dynamic basis, employing a risk benefit assessment which balances risk against the benefits.

“Risk-Benefit management is a fundamental part of life and is a skill needed for young people’s safety and well-being. Staff have a duty of care towards young people. However, this certainly does not mean ‘wrapping them in cotton wool’. Therefore we have responsibility not only to keep young people safe, but also to enable them to learn to manage risks for themselves.”
Getting ready – Managing Risk (From Council for Learning Outside the Classroom)

At Woodland Play Ltd we provide the positive elements needed for risk taking:

  • Supportive adults who don’t intervene too early
  • Encouraging children to make choices
  • Practitioners making risks apparent to children
  • Opportunities to keep themselves and others safe within acceptable boundaries
  • Encouraging children to assess their own risks
  • Encouraging parents to participate in activities
  • Providing small achievable tasks
  • Understanding and matching the appropriate skills to the child’s ability

Duty of Candour – This is a legal requirement for all health and social care services in Scotland, which means that when things go wrong and mistakes happen, the people affected understand what has happened, receive an apology, and that organisations learn how to improve for the future.

Thank you for helping give A the best start to her life. She has absolutely loved her two years with you, exploring the outdoor world with you and her friends. She will miss this time hugely but takes away lots of great knowledge, memories, and a big dose of bravery!
